A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can give you a big boost in confidence. It is most likely undertaken after pregnancy or after losing a significant amount of weight. However, it may also be used to address the effects of aging. If you’re considering a tummy tuck, you should understand what is involved and what your recovery will be like.
Tummy Tuck Recovery
After your tummy tuck, you should be in bed with the head of your bed elevated and multiple pillows under your knees. This position will help to relax the skin on your belly, which was stretched closed. With less tension on the wound, you will experience fewer wound problems and have a better blood supply for healing.
Your abdominal incision and your belly button will be covered with surgical dressing. Small tubes might be placed along the incision site to drain any excess blood or fluid. These drains will be left in place for up to five days after surgery.
After your tummy tuck, your doctor will want you to walk as soon as possible, hopefully from day one. This will help to circulate the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots. You may also be prescribed an anticoagulant or blood thinner shot for several days post-op.
You will experience moderate pain. Prescribed pain medications will help control the pain.
You will experience some swelling in the area. It is normal for the swelling to last up to six weeks or longer. To help minimize swelling and to support your abdomen as it heals, you will wear a supportive abdominal compression garment called an abdominal binder for about six weeks. It is very important that you wear your compression garment.
Remember, it will take time for you to get back to normal and to return to your normal schedule. Don’t push it. For the first six weeks after surgery, you will have to be careful when moving. Be careful not to make any movements that will strain your incision as this may cause the wound to reopen.
In general, it is best to take about two weeks off from work.
Your first-week post-op will be limited to the activities of daily living. During your second week, you can engage in limited activity including driving and shopping. During weeks three and four you may begin walking for exercise. You may resume regular activity after six weeks, depending on how you feel.
