When considering an elective cosmetic procedure, we want to make sure what we do really works and that it’s worth the time, money and effort we’re putting towards it. Liposuction is one of those popular cosmetic procedures that patients often coming in asking about and wondering: Does lipo really work? Today, we’re going answer some of your biggest questions about liposuction so you can determine once-and-for-all whether lipo is worth it for you.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical cosmetic procedure in which fat is removed from the body through a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. Although liposuction is most-popularly done on the abdomen and flanks, lipo can also be done to remove fat from the upper arms, chin, neck, breasts, back, thighs, and calves. Liposuction provides immediate, dramatic results that get better with time as swelling reduces, and is the perfect treatment to help you finally get rid of that stubborn fat that just won’t go away with diet and exercise alone.
What is Typically Involved in Liposuction Surgery?
Depending on the extent of your liposuction procedure, Dr. Philpott will use a general or local anesthetic to help you stay as comfortable as possible throughout your liposuction experience. Once the anesthesia has set in, a small incision will be made through which the cannula can be inserted into the treatment area. The fat will be removed out of the body through the cannula with gentle vacuum suction. Following your procedure, Dr. Philpott will give you compression garments to wear for the next few weeks, to keep the skin pressed tight to your newly contoured body.
Is Liposuction a Good Way to Lose Weight?
Realistically, liposuction shouldn’t be considered a weight-loss option. Rather, liposuction should be seen as a complement to a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. According to national standards, no more than about 11lbs of fat can be removed during each session of liposuction. Because of this, we recommend you be within 30lbs of your ultimate weight goal for several months prior to your procedure. Think of liposuction as a great booster to an already healthy and active lifestyle.
Does Fat Come Back After Lipo?
The answer to this question is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no. Once the targeted fat is removed during liposuction, the fat is removed permanently. This means the fat is never going to be replaced by new fat cells. That being said, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to gain weight in those areas of the body anymore. With a poor diet and little to no exercise, the possibility of gaining weight and disrupting the results of your liposuction treatment increases. It’s important to keep a healthy lifestyle to keep the results of your treatment.
Is Liposuction Worth It?
Really, this depends on the type of results you’re expecting when getting liposuction. If you’re looking to get a quick fix for the 50lbs you want to lose by summer, liposuction may not be right for you. If you’re looking to lose those extra fatty bulges that just won’t go away no matter how much you diet and exercise, however, consider liposuction your solution.
